The Story of Beef Cattle

 

Before we start or tour let's find out more about Beef cattle

 

Terms:

Bovine: The scientific name for beef animals
Bull: A male
Bunk: A large pile of silage
Calf: A baby that is either a male or female
Calving: When a cow has a calf
Cow: A female that has had a calf
Cow/calf operation: The farmer raises calves by leaving them with the cows
Freshen: The same thing as calving
Heifer: A female that is not had a calf yet
Silage: hay or corn that is packed to eliminate air then fermented. It is stored in a bunk or a silo.
Silo: An upright cement structure that stores silage
Steer: Male that has been neutered
